Queen, 2020

We are delighted to launch this new limited edition print by Nasser Azam.

Azam’s seminal painting was included in the “Every Day Is A Miracle” exhibition curated with Art Below in July 2020. The exhibition at Ad Lib Gallery was one of the first art events to take place in London after the Covid-19 lockdown, following months of isolation and global uncertainty.

Profits will go to NHS Charities Together, a collective of NHS Charities supporting staff and volunteers caring for COVID-19 patients.

The print, titled “Queen”, is based on a portrait painting of Queen Elizabeth II wearing a medical mask. The monarch is represented in a 16th century costume to celebrate British royal traditions and remind the audience of the seemingly insurmountable difficulties the country has overcome in the past.

In Azam’s words: “‘Queen’ reflects two things that have supported us during the lockdown – the leadership of the Queen and the commitment, compassion and professionalism of the NHS staff which was a testimony on the resolve of our nation at these uncertain and unprecedented times. It is my great pleasure to collaborate with Ad Lib Gallery and Art Below and honour the heroic efforts of our NHS.”

The print is a continuation of Azam’s previous projects which resonate with humanity as a whole while going where others wouldn’t dare. This is most obvious in the artist’s Performance Paintings series, which saw him making art in extreme physical conditions, such as freezing temperatures or zero gravity.
